Welcome to Flying U Land and Cattle!
Our family has been ranching here in the Big Horn basin of northern Wyoming for 110 years, first starting as sheep men then moving to raising commercial cattle in the early 1900's.
I believe that raising commercial cattle for all these years gives us a better understanding of the challenges that ranchers face so we can provide genetics that will help cattlemen stay in business. The first being that cattle have to convert the #1 resource, Grass, to muscle. While fleshing ability is important muscle is what makes real pounds. Cows that don't have any muscling will be nothing more than a shell once they lose their fat reserves.
We have recognized that composite cattle make this work and that heterosis is the easiest way to add profitability to a ranch. The other factors affecting profitability are managing costs, including feed costs and labor. The costs that we put into our cattle operation can be magnified many times by some large commercial operations. When other feed sources besides grass are utilized, cost of gain is our main focus. Our bulls are developed on a ration that most any operation could afford to develop young cattle,as even this year our cost of gain is less than 50 cents while the bulls are still gaining better than 3.5 pounds per day. While our bulls are developed to be breeders and not feeders, these cattle have been proven in the feedlot as well. Last year the bottom 60% of our steers averaged 3.54# per day gain, while converting 4.97:1. grading 69% chice,70% yield grades 1&2's with an average carcess weight of 813#. Our bulls were the top gaining pen of bulls at Midland bull test in 2005. Meanwhile we have produced many county fair champions, as well as the Reserve Champion steer at the Oregon state fair and the champion heavyweight pen of three at the Pheonix International. While show cattle are not our main focus, we believe structure and confirmation will always play a role in determining the value of cattle. Disposition is a main focus, as we understand the labor pressures and realize that many times all family members are called upon to help with the cattle work. While accidents are always possible, calm quiet cattle can help minimize the chances of injury as well as damages to facilities.
We sell by private treaty as much as possible so the cattle can be kept affordable while still allowing us to make a profit, as we both need to stay in business. We believe focusing on these areas make balanced cattle that will be adaptable to adress a wide spectrum of needs for our customers to continue to be profitable.
